October 30th, 2017 at 10:45 am sitting here in my office for the 4th consecutive week of zero service calls? Sure it’s been unusually warm here in the northeast and I guess people have the tendency to forget that we’re only about 54 days away from Christmas. Without warning it’s going to get unusually cold and those balmy days of summer will be long forgotten. Soon the calls will come from freezing homeowners wondering why their heat won’t kick on.
One advantage to the downtime is that I replaced the dated (40 years) heating system and hot water heater (no. 3) in my home. As you would imagine, I have access to all the newest energy efficient equipment available in the marketplace. 98%, 95%, 90% efficient condensing boilers, tank-less water heaters and every other piece of technology being marketed by the leading manufacturers of heating equipment.
The Latest Craze or Peace of Mind?
So what did this plumber decide to install in his own home you ask? Well, I hate to disappoint the masses, but the choice for this old timer was a time-tested, ease of installation, reliable and literally trouble free 82% efficient cast iron water boiler with an indirect water heater. Will I pay a couple of penny’s more for my energy? Sure I will, But I’ll have the peace of mind that multiple breakdowns, error codes and having to be on the phone with tech support to figure out what’s wrong with my boiler has been eliminated.
Don’t get me wrong, there are many exciting products on the market that are guaranteed to save you some serious bucks on your energy costs. But the problem as I see it is #1 we as Americans are spoiled when it comes to the realistic expectations from the latest technologies and #2 the serious lack of qualified technicians that can troubleshoot and repair this equipment. I’ve seen it first hand as a result of servicing the latest and greatest and after long and serious consideration I decided to stick with updated traditional technology. A.K.A., peace of mind!
Trust me, if I installed the latest and greatest high tech wall hung condensing technology, in my home and I, unfortunately, check out of this world prematurely, rest assured my wife would dig me up just to tell me how the hell could you do this to me! Fear, not sweetheart, I left you with time-tested reliable equipment that literally any plumbing or heating technician worth his salt will be able to repair without breaking the bank. You’re Welcome!
He Knows Not of What He Speaks!
I can hear now what the experts reading this are saying. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about, he’s not up on the current technology, he’s shortchanging his customers by installing low efficiency, low tech equipment. Here’s the way I see it folks, we’re eventually all going to have to face the fact that high efficiency equipment will be our only choice. We should all work toward conserving energy much like our European neighbors, but we’re going to have to change our daily habits which will take practice and a bit of time. We Americans want what we want and want it NOW! Are we ready to live by a new set of rules on how or when we can take a shower or bath? Maybe!
The Payout Will Take Years!
The up front costs of installing the latest and greatest high efficiency (95% plus) equipment will cost three to four times more than current traditional (80%/85%) choices we now have. Add to that the mandatory annual maintenance required to keep it running in tip top shape and the payback could take up to 10 years or more depending on the equipment you choose. Add to that sub-par installation methods due to a lack of qualified technicians and don’t forget the D.I.Y community who will get their experience from You-Tube, and you have a recipe for a disaster!
For my money and long term peace of mind I’m willing to pay a couple of penny’s more in fuel costs to have long term trouble free reliability. So when was the last time to had your heating equipment serviced? On Friday they’re predicting 70 degree temperature’s here in New York City. 70 degrees in November, that’s insane! But make no mistake the cold will be here before we know it and the question will be, is your heating equipment up for the task? Head on over to my contact page and make an appointment with me to have a look today.
